Custom Audiences

Custom Audiences let you target existing customers and site visitors on Meta. Pixel degradation, shrinking lists, and retargeting overlap can silently kill their performance.

What is Custom Audiences?

Custom Audiences are first-party audience segments you create inside Meta Ads Manager from data you own — including customer email or phone lists, website visitors tracked via the Meta Pixel or Conversions API, app events, and video viewers. They are the foundation of effective retargeting because they let you reach people who have already expressed intent with your brand.

In a post-iOS 14 environment, the health of your Custom Audiences depends heavily on your tracking infrastructure. Pixel-based audiences are smaller and noisier than they were before Apple's App Tracking Transparency changes, making server-side tracking via the Conversions API increasingly critical for maintaining audience quality.

How to Detect Issues with Custom Audiences

  • Retargeting audience size shrinking month-over-month without a corresponding drop in site traffic — indicates Pixel degradation, tracking consent issues, or iOS signal loss reducing match rates
  • Customer list match rate below 60% in Audience Manager — typically caused by formatting issues (unhashed emails, inconsistent phone number formats) or an outdated list that doesn't reflect current customers
  • Significant overlap between your retargeting audience and cold prospecting ad sets — means you are paying cold-audience CPMs to reach people who should be in a cheaper retargeting pool, and bidding against yourself
  • Retargeting CPM rising while audience size stays flat — over-targeting a small, exhausted pool drives up auction price; the audience may need expanding or the creative rotating
  • Exclusion lists not applied — existing purchasers appearing in prospecting campaigns, wasting spend on people who have already converted

How AdEvolver Handles Custom Audiences

AdEvolver automates the monitoring and optimization of Custom Audiences across your account:

  1. 24/7 Monitoring: AdEvolver tracks estimated audience sizes for your key Custom Audiences and flags abnormal shrinkage — catching Pixel or CAPI degradation before it silently erodes your retargeting reach.
  2. Slack Alerts: When a high-value retargeting audience (e.g., 30-day website visitors) drops below a minimum viable size threshold, a Slack alert fires so you can investigate the tracking issue before your retargeting campaigns run out of audience to deliver to.
  3. One-Click Fixes: When AdEvolver detects that prospecting and retargeting audiences overlap significantly, the fix applies the correct exclusion list to the affected prospecting ad sets — closing the most common cause of self-competition.
