Bid Strategy

The instruction you give Meta for how to bid in ad auctions — choice of strategy controls the trade-off between delivery volume, cost efficiency, and CPA stability.

What is a Bid Strategy?

A bid strategy is the setting that tells Meta's algorithm how to participate in ad auctions on your behalf. The four main options are: Lowest Cost (spend the full budget while minimising CPA, no ceiling), Cost Cap (maintain an average CPA at or below your target), Bid Cap (set a maximum CPM or CPC bid per auction), and ROAS Goal (optimise for a minimum return on ad spend). Each strategy involves a different trade-off between delivery volume, cost predictability, and campaign control.

How to Detect Issues with Your Bid Strategy

  • Cost Cap or ROAS Goal campaigns consistently underspending (below 70% of daily budget) — the target is too aggressive for current auction conditions, throttling delivery
  • Bid Cap campaigns showing erratic delivery — winning some auctions and losing others unpredictably, leading to spend spikes and gaps rather than smooth pacing
  • Switching from Lowest Cost to Cost Cap causing a sudden ROAS drop — the transition often triggers a learning phase reset, temporarily degrading performance
  • ROAS Goal campaigns going inactive during competitive periods (holidays, sales) — the floor is unachievable when auction prices spike and Meta pauses delivery rather than miss the goal
  • Multiple ad sets using Cost Cap with overlapping audiences — they compete against each other while both constrained, amplifying the CPM inflation from audience overlap

How AdEvolver Handles Bid Strategy Issues

AdEvolver monitors bid strategy performance and delivery health to catch constraints before they waste a full day's budget:

  1. 24/7 Monitoring: AdEvolver tracks delivery rate and spend pacing relative to each campaign's bid strategy type, distinguishing normal variance from strategy-induced throttling or inactivity.
  2. Slack Alerts: A Slack notification fires when a Cost Cap or ROAS Goal campaign underspends by >30% of its daily budget, or when a campaign goes inactive — including the bid strategy setting and current vs. target cost, so you can diagnose immediately.
  3. One-Click Fixes: When a bid constraint is causing chronic underspend, AdEvolver flags whether the fix is to raise the cap, switch to Lowest Cost temporarily, or consolidate overlapping constrained ad sets.
