Audience Overlap
When multiple ad sets target audiences that share the same users, causing internal auction competition that drives up CPMs and wastes budget on both sides.
What is Audience Overlap?
Audience overlap occurs when two or more of your active ad sets target audiences with significant user overlap — meaning the same people are eligible to be served ads from multiple ad sets simultaneously. Because Meta's auction is a per-user competition, your own ad sets end up bidding against each other for the same impressions. This self-competition drives up your CPMs, reduces efficiency across both ad sets, and can cause erratic delivery patterns that look like external market changes but are entirely self-inflicted.
How to Detect Issues with Audience Overlap
- Two ad sets with similar interest-based targeting both showing CPMs 25%+ above your account average — classic self-competition signal
- ROAS declining on both ad sets simultaneously without any creative or budget changes on either
- Frequency rising unusually fast on both ad sets despite moderate daily budgets — the same users are being served from both pools
- One ad set "stealing" all the budget from a CBO campaign while the other starves — the algorithm concentrates spend on whichever wins the first auction, often leaving the overlapping set with near-zero delivery
- Using a broad or interest audience for both prospecting and retargeting without exclusions — warm audiences frequently get caught in cold targeting pools
How AdEvolver Handles Audience Overlap
AdEvolver's deep audit engine calculates overlap using API data, not estimates:
- 24/7 Monitoring: AdEvolver compares audience definitions across all active ad sets and estimates overlap percentages using Meta API signals, continuously updated as audiences change or new ad sets are added.
- Slack Alerts: When overlap between two ad sets exceeds 20%, a prioritised Slack alert fires with the specific ad set pair, the estimated overlap percentage, and the combined daily budget being affected.
- One-Click Fixes: Depending on the overlap type, AdEvolver recommends the appropriate fix: adding exclusion audiences to the prospecting ad set, consolidating the overlapping ad sets, or restructuring into a single CBO campaign that avoids internal competition.
