Attribution Window

The time period after an ad click or view in which Meta credits a conversion to that ad — a setting that dramatically affects reported ROAS if misused.

What is an Attribution Window?

An attribution window defines how long after someone clicks or views your ad Meta will credit a resulting conversion to that campaign. Meta offers four main options: 1-day click, 7-day click, 1-day click + 1-day view, and 7-day click + 1-day view. The choice of window significantly affects reported ROAS — a 7-day click window will always report higher numbers than a 1-day click window for the same campaign, because it captures purchases that happen days after the initial ad exposure.

How to Detect Issues with Your Attribution Window

  • Comparing two campaigns using different attribution windows and drawing performance conclusions — a 7-day click campaign will almost always appear to "beat" a 1-day click campaign even if actual incremental performance is identical
  • Reported ROAS is high but revenue growth is flat — view-through attribution (1-day view) may be counting organic purchases that would have happened regardless of the ad exposure
  • Same-day ROAS appears low on a campaign optimised for a product with a longer consideration cycle — 30–40% of conversions on considered purchases arrive within 2–7 days of the click, not same-day
  • Attribution settings changed mid-test — makes before/after comparisons meaningless since you're comparing different measurement windows
  • Multiple ad sets reporting the same conversion event due to overlapping attribution windows on overlapping audiences

How AdEvolver Handles Attribution Window Issues

AdEvolver monitors attribution settings for consistency and flags comparisons that would produce misleading conclusions:

  1. 24/7 Monitoring: AdEvolver tracks the attribution window setting for every active campaign and flags any inconsistency across campaigns that are being evaluated against each other.
  2. Slack Alerts: If an attribution setting changes on an active campaign — whether manually or due to a Meta policy update — AdEvolver sends a Slack notification immediately, since this invalidates ongoing performance comparisons.
  3. One-Click Fixes: When attribution inconsistencies are detected across comparable campaigns, AdEvolver highlights the specific campaigns to standardise and recommends the appropriate window based on your product's typical purchase cycle.
